The Dreaded Junk Drawers

You know the routine.  Your in your kitchen, you’re trying to find something, digging around in there and it’s just a mess.  There’s loose birthday candles, coins, random screws and parts for around the house, toys, packets of ketchup, and maybe some family heirlooms you put somewhere safe but then forgot where.  Surprise!  There they are.  Oh come on, you know it’s in there somewhere.  Ouch! You just poked yourself on something sharp.  What is that safety pin doing in here… and it’s not even closed? ?  Where’s a Band-Aid, you’re bleeding now.  Oh forget it, you’re just going to pick one up on the way to work.  This is ridiculous.  You say to yourself that you will organize this drawer when you get home tonight… but you’ve been telling yourself that every day.   For 2 years.

Here’s what you can do to get it organized.

  1. Take everything out.  Then give it a good cleaning.
  2. Measure the length, width and height of the drawer.
  3. Get drawer organizers, available at The Container Store in many sizes to fit your exact measurements.  *Bonus Tip* Take a piece of newspaper, lay it flat in the drawer and cut it to the size, then take that with you to the store to get the right organizers.  Or you can just use small boxes or containers that you already have.  Without organizers, items get jumbled up and lost in the back.  You end up losing things and not using all your space.
  4. Go through all the clutter that was in the drawer and decide what’s garbage, what belongs somewhere else and what’s going back in.
  5. Put everything that belongs in the drawer back in nicely into the organizers.  Try to keep things by category so it makes it easy to identify and locate items.
  6. Take your piles that you made that belong somewhere else and bring them where they are supposed to go.  That’s it!
