Did you know that many of Delray & Boynton's parks, playgrounds, pools, community centers and schools are named after very important and influential black residents?
Black history is an important part of American History and local history, so during the month of February, we are taking a moment to highlight Delray & Boynton Beach's black artists, business-owners, influencers, parents and history.
If you have ever been to Pompey Park, swam in the John Denson Pool, participated at an event at the Carolyn Sims Community Center, or know someone who goes to Spady Elementary School, then you have heard the names of some of the leading black citizens in Delray & Boynton Beach!
Mr. Solomon D. Spady was a principal/teacher that came to Delray Beach upon the recommendation of George Washington Carver and became one of the most influential African Americans in Delray Beach.
Carolyn Sims served the City of Boynton Beach for 41 years as an employee in the Recreation and Parks department. She embraced all ages and races, while raising her own large extended family.
John Denson and his family are well-know in the Boynton Beach community and was a long-time pool supervisor and swimming instructor. The pool was names in honor of hi service to our community.
Mr. Charles S. Pompey was a Civil rights activist, teacher, and principal that left a lasting impression on Delray Beach and it's education system.
